During its IFA 2020 show last year, Qualcomm proved that it will launch Snapdragon 400 series chipsets among 5G support next year. We’re just four days away from 2021 and Qualcomm has officially published the Snapdragon 480 5G chipset. Snapdragon 480 5G is the first 5G chipset in this Snapdragon 400 series. It joins the ranks of this Snapdragon 690 5G also Snapdragon 750G to democratize 5G connectivity for the masses.
Snapdragon 480 5G: Specifications
Snapdragon 480 5G can be seen as a successor to these Snapdragon 460, which was present in early 2020. However, it ushers in a new era for 400 series chipsets. This Snapdragon 480 5G is an octa-core chipset based at this 8 nm process node.
This chipset highlights Qualcomm Kryo 460 CPU cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz. It was introduced with the Snapdragon 675 in October 2018. It includes 2x Kryo 460 Gold cores clocked at 2.0 GHz and 6 silver cores clocked at 1.7 GHz. The chipset is paired with the Adreno 619 GPU (which is found on board the Snapdragon 750G), Hexagon 686 DSP, and more than 70% improvement in AI performance.
All of this results in an improvement of up to 100% in CPU also GPU performance, Qualcomm boasts in official press publicity. Snapdragon 480 5G is also this first 400 series chipset to support Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0+. As for 5G connectivity, this chipset comes equipped with this Snapdragon X51 5G modem. Supports sub-6GHz and mmWave networks, SA / NSA, TDD / FDD modes, also more. This combines with Qualcomm FastConnect 6200 to bring you Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, dual-frequency GPS, NavIC, also other connectivity features.
This Snapdragon 480 5G chipset supports displays up to Full-HD + with a 120Hz refresh rate, Spectra 345 ISP for this triple camera, and aptX audio support. Qualcomm says that this chipset supports up to triple 13MP photo capture, 64MP single capture, also video recording up to 1080p at 60FPS.
Availability: First Snapdragon 480 5G Smartphone?
Now, since 5G services are expected to roll out in India by the second half of 2021 (at least, according to Reliance Jio), you must be eager to know when you can get an affordable 5G smartphone in India. Qualcomm is working among partners like HMD Global (Nokia phones), Oppo, also Vivo to bring 5G smartphones to the masses.
You can expect commercial smartphones powered by this Snapdragon 480 5G mobile platform to begin rolling out in early 2021. This chipset will compete with the MediaTek Dimensity 700 series in the budget segment.
