MediaTek advances to expand its 5G chipset lineup with the launch of new Dimensity chipsets. The chipmaker today announced the Dimensity 800U chipset and it can essentially be seen as a younger brother to the Dimensity 800 from earlier this year. It’s the company’s sixth-dimensional chipset and will help bring 5G connectivity to more mid-range phones in the coming months.

MediaTek Dimensity 800U: Specs

The Dimensity 800U is an eight-core chipset manufactured using the 7nm TSMC FinFET process. It includes two ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of up to 2.4GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of up to 2.0GHz. It is paired with the ARM Mali-G57 MC3 GPU, which is also onboard the 800 and 720 dimensions.

On top titles, game launch times are up to 1.4 seconds quicker than the Dimensity 700 series, while benchmarks are up to 11% faster on CPU and 28% faster in GPU performance, “tells MediaTek on the Dimensity 800U official home page. The chipset comes with a built-in 5G modem, which supports Dual-SIM Dual-Standby, 5G dual-mode (SA / NSA), and carrier aggregation. It’s also backed by MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave technology.

This chipset includes a separate artificial intelligence processing unit (APU) for the camera and security enhancements. Supports up to 12GB of 2133MHz LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage. In addition, you will find screens up to 120 Hz onboard phones with Dimensity 800U technology. It supports up to Full-HD + resolution displays, along with MediaTek’s MiraVision technology that enhances the playback of HDR10 + content.

As for the cameras, the chipset hits a 64MP single sensor or a 20MP + 16MP dual-camera system. It supports 4K video recording, HDR-ISP, multi-frame noise reduction, and other out-of-the-box camera features.

Dimensity 800U vs Dimensity 800

There is only a slight difference between MediaTek Dimensity 800 and 800U. The first includes 2 Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.4 GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores up to 2.0 GHz, while the second includes 4 Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.6 GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 cores of up to 2.0 GHz. The GPU clock speed will vary but is essentially the same.

Additionally, support for key hardware components – including a 120Hz display, up to 64MP cameras, LPDDR4X RAM (up to 2133MHz), and UFS 2.1 storage – remains the same.

Dimensity 800U now joins the ranks of Dimensity 1000, 1000+, 800, 820, and 800 to bring 5G connectivity to a wider audience. However, MediaTek’s 5G chipsets have been limited to phones in China to date. The company claims we will see the global launch of Dimensity-powered phones in Q4 2020.
