India on Wednesday banned more than 100 mobile apps, including the popular PUBG mobile game.
The Information and Technology Ministry has banned a total of 118 apps, according to an official statement. Banned mobile apps are detrimental to India’s sovereignty, integrity, defense and public order, the ministry said. The move comes against the backdrop of tension between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology received several complaints from various sources, including reports about the misuse of some mobile applications available on the Android and iOS platforms. The complaints alleged the theft and surreptitious transmission of user data in an unauthorized manner to servers possibly having locations outside of India.
“The collection of this data, its extraction and profiling by elements hostile to the national security and defense of India, which ultimately affects the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern. that requires emergency measures, “the statement. said.
India’s Cybercrime Coordination Center under the Home Office also sent a recommendation to block these controversial apps. Also in the public realm, there has been a strong demand to crack down on mobile apps that harm the sovereignty of India and the privacy of citizens.
As of early June, the Center had banned 59 mobile apps, mostly Chinese, such as TikTok, UC Browser and WeChat, citing concerns that they are “ detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the state and public order. ” .
